Pre-Race – Corvette Racing – GT2
ALMS’ Petit Le Mans at
Road Atlanta, 28 SEP 09 is the first true endurance test for
Corvette Racing’s new class participation in GT2. It is a
cruel race defined over 1,000 miles/10 hours, whichever
occurs first. Not only is the race a major challenge, but
new to the Corvette Racing equation is competition.
Formidable competition, BMW, Ford, Ferrari, Panoz, Porsche
and Viper, all exacerbated by P1 and P2 classes, all 27 on
the track, all with different performance, drivers and
strategies, all at the same time. Each C6.R was meticulously
prepared by Pratt & Miller for this race. Three days of
practice brought transcending confidence established through
years of success in GT1. Despite the fact that Porsche and
Ferrari were instrumental in making sure that ALMS required
Corvette to remove the direct injection heads which help
fuel economy, direct injection heads will be okay next year.

Olivier Beretta
and Johnny O’Connell qualified third and seventh.
“Qualifying was a disappointment in that we had too
much under steer in the car. I never place too much
emphasis on it as I’ve always focused more on having a
good car for the race and not just one lap.” – Johnny
O’Connell.

The competition
knew that Corvette Racing was there to win. However,
there was the most looming and daunting race factor –
weather, strong possibility of real rain!
