Corvette Racing – GT2

Rain – Wets, Dry –
Slicks, Rain – Wets, Dry – Slicks, etc. |
Rain provided the theme of the race.
For weeks prior to Petit, north Georgia was drenched on a
regular basis. At one point, the weekend preceding the race,
the Atlanta area rate of rainfall was 5” an hour. Race day
proved to be no exception to the rain rule(s). At the start
of the race, there was light rain for about 20 minutes with
everyone on wets; however, after about 50 minutes a dry line
began to form. The #4 and #3 Corvettes quickly advanced from
their third and seventh qualifying positions into first and
second and maintained for the first three hours of the race.
Then the rain returned, followed by a flurry of pit stops
that rearranged the race order. After the tire changes to
wets, the two Corvettes worked their way back to first and
second, with Johnny in first and Olly in second. The rain
stopped. As the dry line formed, they returned for slicks,
with Olly emerging in first and Johnny in second.

Rain, Rain, Rain. |
After about 1½ hours, during the first
full-course yellow, the Corvettes made their first driver
changes to Olivier Beretta (#4) and Jan Magnussen (#3). The
whole GT2 field bunched during the second full-course
yellow, all within 20 seconds of each other in the third
hour. During the third full-course yellow, they made another
driver change putting in Antonio Garcia (#3) and Marcel
Fassler (#4). During the fifth caution, the Corvettes
pitted and returned in third (#4) and fourth (#3)
positions.

Rain, Rain, Rain
and More Rain. |
The rain returned in the flooding form
– back in for wets amongst mass confusion and back onto the
flooding track went Olly and Johnny.
|
Wow! Oh no! |
Ferrari’s rain detector worked the
best and made it in for wets before anyone else put on full wets and swam into first
place.

Rain, Rain, Rain,
aquaplane off track! |
The race was red-flagged at 4:50 PM
and the cars lined up in pit lane with rain coats until the
race was terminated three hours and 55 minutes later. It was
a wise and safe call to terminate the race. Corvette Racing
finished 4th and 6th and LG MotorSports finished 8th.
