Spring has
departed and summer is upon us. The Southwest is in a horrible drought.
Here in Yucaipa we have had only 5” of rain instead of our normal 16”.
Our usual glorious wild flower display was rather dismal this year
because of the lack of moisture. We had a very rare severe freeze that
killed a lot of plants, leaving only dry tender. This foretells a really
bad fire season and more of our forest succumbing to disease and
insects. We all need to be very careful when enjoying our beautiful
outdoors.
Our beautiful and exciting Corvettes are noticed and appreciated not
only by fellow owners, but by the civilian population as well. During
one of my commutes home from Pahrump, I came upon the Agricultural
Inspection Station where I am normally waved through without the
required stop and questions. This time the young man raised his arm in
the halt position and said to me “Sorry, but I had to stop you. This car
looks so fricken, awesome bad”. As I left the inspection booth, I had to
smile and of course hit the throttle just a little harder to open the
exhaust butterflies so that he could hear that amazing Z06 LS7 engine.
That smile stayed with me for many miles!
It has been a very exciting few months since my last column. Most of the
Southwest continues Corvette activities throughout the year, but we have
really picked up the pace this spring. There have been large and small
shows, cruises to many different venues including museums, race tracks,
tuner shops, manufacturing facilities, mountains, canyons, deserts,
beaches and restaurants. A large number of these activities revolve
around fund raising for many different charitable foundations. Please
remember that you support these very worthwhile charities with your
registration and raffle dollars.
 The
ALMS came to the Long Beach Grand Prix for the first time in March. With
the ALMS came the C6.R’s and the full support of Corvette Marketing. We
had a great Corvette Corral that overflowed into the Porsche Corral and
a nice shaded hospitality tent. Corvette C6.R team drivers came to the
hospitality tent for our own private autograph session. Lou Gigliotti
dropped by to tell us about the World Challenge Race and his Corvette,
signed autographs and helped us present the Car Show awards. Tom Wallace
signed autographs, talked to us about Corvette Racing and Corvettes in
general and chatted with the Corvette fans. Marketing Director Gary
Claudio spent time with the attendees. Roc and Nancy Linkov came out
from the Museum to make sure that everything ran smoothly. Ron and Lynda
Fellows [C5R# Z5201] dropped by the hospitality tent just
to visit with everyone.
The Ron Fellows Limited Edition Arctic White Z06 and the Indianapolis
500 Pace Car were on display for all to enjoy, and were a prime
attraction for visitors posing for photos.
 There
were celebrity car show awards, club participation award, distance
award, and many FUN raffles. Attendees received a special dash plaque
and a goody bag. This was a great event and should be even larger next
year. The Long Beach Grand Prix is a very big party with lots to do and
lots to observe.
Corvette Track Days were held at Spring Mountain [Corporate Member
# MC065] in April. There were over 100 drivers that drove in
from many states including Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Missouri,
Illinois, Minnesota and Pennsylvania. There were raffle prizes that
included brake lines, gift certificates, apparel and posters. A first
time event was the raffle for a 3-Day, Spring Mountain Driving School
with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. Art and Joyce
Majors [C5R# Y5122] from Carson City, Nevada won the 3-Day
Driving School, donating it back for auction where it raised even more
money. Corvette people are very generous and they just kept giving until
we had raised over $8,000 to fight the big “C”. Everyone had a great
time and learned more about their fabulous Corvettes.
Hot Nevada Vettes held a car show and rally at the Spring Mountain upper
paddock during the Corvette Track Days and both groups joined together
for parade laps, dinner and FUN.
The Official C5/C6 Registry’s 10th Anniversary Celebration at the
Birthday Bash was held at the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY. We
photographed just a few of the people representing the Western United
States. Some of us had to fly, but there were many that made the
cross-country journey in their Corvettes. It was really great to see so
many of my long distance friends and to meet new friends. The vendors’
area had a nice selection of Corvette related products. The seminars
were informative and entertaining, especially the Ron (Fellows) & Johnny
(O’Connell) [C5R# Z5207] Show. There were plant tours, road trips and,
of course, the introduction of the 2008 Corvette.
I loved the entire Birthday Bash, but I was really moved by the Racing
Awards Dinner salute to Ron Fellows. Ron has been with Corvette Racing
since Day One and loves Corvette as much as the most avid enthusiast.
Johnny O presented a special award to Ron and it was obvious just how
close these two Corvette drivers have become over the years. Ron and
Johnny, we all feel the same way about both of you! The audience had
another memorable moment when it was announced that there will be a
third C6.R racing at Mosport this year on August 26th with Ron Fellows
and Andy Pilgrim [C5R# Z5202] back together again. The ALMS motto is
“For The Fans”, but for Corvette Racing the fans are made to feel like a
part of the Corvette Racing family.
The last ALMS
race for 2007 will be held on October 20th at Laguna Seca in Monterey,
California. This will be a very special “not to be missed” event. For
